Will a electrical item from the US work in the UK & what is the difference?

IE:

TV%26#39;s. HifI, DVD Player%26#39;s

Answer:

I%26#39;ve reviewed other answers, and this is my input. TV%26#39;s no, stereos, if they don%26#39;t have a built in converter(like some Phillips products), you will have to have a step-down transformer, same for DVD player%26#39;s. Also you should check with UK customs officials to see if you will be charged any import fee%26#39;s.If you are U. S. military, the customs part will be taken care of when you pack your hold baggage, you will have some one watching over your shoulder. you can get plugs so you can plug them in over here but i got a electric toothbrush in new york and the charger stopped working, at the bottom the plastic had a dark bump in it so i guess the higher power over here blew it, i got a english charger and now its fine You need a step down transformer(s) to start with. 240v-110v.

TV wont work as we have a different signal, PAL.

Hi Fi should be ok, dvd, not to sure...

hope this helps.. yes but you need a us adapter for uk sockets TV%26#39;s no.Others above need voltage and plug adaptors-not worth bother.Laptops/electric razors ok though-they have their own voltage adaptor to DC.You only need a mains plug adaptor US to UK which you can get here in an ironmonger/electrical shop for under £5. Simple answer is no. US=110 Vac, 60 Hz - UK=240 Vac, 50 Hz. However, if the equipment has a voltage adjustment on the rear panel that allows you to select either, then yes, most devices will work. TV%26#39;s use a different colour encoding system, so won%26#39;t recieve broadcast signals (PAL). US uses NTSC. An NTSC video will work with an NTSC TV with an NTSC video tape but won%26#39;t play a PAL tape. no it wont work the electricity is different ( found out the hard way in France) they had a sign there too and i just hade a brain fart and did it anyways.my wife didnt let me forget anymore...lol The US works on a slightly highter AC frequency of 60hz, the main problem is the voltage is around double, a transformer is the only way, some devices won%26#39;t work whatsoever, a CD player we had for work was fine, but the LCD TV didn%26#39;t work very well at all.
