Most cheap AM radios are junk with terrible selectivity, making all the stations "run-together".
A quality AM radio with tuned RF circuits such as the GE SUPERADIO III:

will improve reception greatly.
Adding an indoor AM antenna like the SELECT-A-TENNA:

adds even more improvement. Probably a better antennae.
But the main problem with AM is the nature of it. AM is Amplitude Modulation, so you are bound to get most signals from the correct radio stations that you choose, however any static at night is unavoidable. Solar interference, and other sources are your problem. put some tin foil on it and move it all around unitl i get a good signal there;s usually more static during the day. you can get more am stations at night. its a fact.
