Will 911/GPS work on a phone if the battery is dead? Can it be traced?

We were thinking about getting my mom a cellphone in case of an emergency. She agreed to let us put it in her glove compartment in her car in case she needs to dial 911. But I know she will not recharge the battery every few days like she is supposed to.

So my question is , If the phone%26#39;s battery is dead and she dials 911 , will they be able to locate her with the gps chip in the phone even though the battery is dead?

I saw a guy on tv that said even if the phone is switched off now, it will still be able to locate her. And new phones may have secondary batteries or capacitors that allow the gps chip to still be traced in an emergency even if the battery is dead?

Answer:

If the battery has no charge then she can%26#39;t make the outgoing 911 call. So it cannot be traced because the call has not been completed.

GPS is global positioning satellite. 911 centers do not utilize satellites, they use tower triangulation to locate cellular 911 callers. So the GPS chip is irrelevant. Nope it won%26#39;t work.

I would suggest the following:

1. Get a d.c. LCD digital fast charger at walmart. Its about $20. It will tell you how long the battery will take to charge.

2. Get a spare battery for her and charge it and put it in her glove compartment box in a big orange something. It will hold its charge for a long time a week or two.

As far as the other thing, I have heard this too but I am not sure. yep as long as it has gas in it.
