Like most of us, I have a %26#39;nest%26#39; of remotes near my entertainment center. And, like most of us I have tried to %26#39;program%26#39; them to work with the other products. Its a lesson in exasperation. I even have a rich friend who paid $600 to buy a touch screen command center. He then had a tech come out at $85/hour to set it up.and it still does not do all the functions.
Lots of companies agree on standards for the good of the market. Why can%26#39;t AV companies solve this problem?
Answer:
Because it won%26#39;t make them or their sales firms money! One of the factors that people use to decide which product they buy is the remote. If all of the remotes were standard, it could some of lose them business.
Also, when they wanted to add a new function, they%26#39;d have to apply to some kind of standards committee, which then would tip off their competition to their new function, allowing the competition to catch up quicker -- reducing their market share.
And, they won%26#39;t sell more items just because the remotes all talk to everything. People are still going to upgrade/replace their electronics, whether the remotes talk or not. So, why put in the effort (i.e. money) to save us the time? It%26#39;s a cost with no guarantee of any profit...
