Why is my clock radio making a crackling sound?

I woke up this morning and my clock radio was making a crackling sound.

It sounds somewhat like static but the thing is when I unplugged it the sound continued. I put it outside in case it%26#39;s a fire hazard and it%26#39;s still crackling!

Why is this happening and is the radio ruined even the it still plays and keeps time?

It sounds like it has a battery back-up (that keeps it going if the power goes off). The crackling sound could be that the speaker has been blown.by turning up the volume too loud for too long. If this is the case it isn%26#39;t a fire hazard, it%26#39;s just irritating. if the crackling sound is coming from the speakers then itz usually the tuner is off frequency.
