Why dont my AA alkaline batteries work?

We have an older Columbus Electric home thermostat that has been indicating LO batteries. The AA alkaline batteries that are on there are over 5 years old! When we put in brand new Energizer Max batteries the unit does not work. We have tried different packages of Energizers, checked and rechecked to make sure the connections are met, and yes they are installed in the right manner. When we put the old batteries back in they work!

Is there any difference in AA Alkaline batteries that may be causing this?

Answer:

Please check the voltage output from your old batteries. You may not be dealing with AA alkaline batteries. Most Walmart auto departments offer cheap voltmeters.

If you have the instruction book for your thermostat, check it to see what it says about the battery type to install.

No manual or voltmeter? Go online and find the thermostat maker%26#39;s website. They will most likely offer "customer support" or just "support" tabs to click for more info, or at the least, a FAQ section and phone number for service. That is REALLY weird. It practically violates the laws of physics if your batteries don%26#39;t work in the thermostat, but they work in another device; and yet the thermostat works with other batteries!

Maybe try a couple of different types of batteries to see if they work:

* The really cheap NON-alkaline ones like "eveready super heavy duty"

* Rechargables

I realize that the ones you%26#39;re trying really SHOULD work, but they appear not to (you did test them in another device, right?), so now I%26#39;d try another type of battery. Or another brand.
