Why doesnt my computer play sound? Everything is connected but it isnt playing sound at all?

I have a AMD Duron running on Windows XP. I Have Altec Lansing Multimedia speakers. And they are a Computer Surround Sound System.

turn the speakers up. if that doesn%26#39;t work thenactivate the speakers This has happened to me before. I usually go to the control panel and check the settings for "sounds and audio devices" even the "advanced" buttons. When that didn%26#39;t work, I restarted my computer, then it works. go to start and click task manager and then find the speaker tweaker thing and mess around with that Listen, click on start, settings, control panel and then click on system. Then click on hardware and Device Manager. Go down to sound, video and game controllers and click on the the little plus sign to the left of the device. If there is anything wrong it will tell you what to do to fix the problem.
