i need to revise the question. i plug a 1/8 plug into the headphone jack and it goes to a red/white RCA Cable that is plugged into my yamaha amp. my question is that i am not able to control both left and right on my amp because of the way the connection is made.
maybe i need a different sound card that has separate outputs for left and right channel -- or different controls.
Answer:
Unless your computer is over 10 years old, your sound card is probably in stereo. I honestly have not seen a mono sound card since 1996, and it was old even back then!
As long as you are using a STEREO 1/8" plug (3 conductors including ground) to two RCA%26#39;s you should be alright. So your amp doesn%26#39;t let you control left and right. You could use a mixer to go between your computer and the amp, and hook up a mic, turntables and cd players that way, but you can control left and right balance through windows by double clicking on the speaker icon in the bottom right and dragging the left right control just above the master volume.
