Why cant I record with a VCR from a HDTV, do I need a DVD?

I have a HDTV, if I record with a VCR %26 play back the quality is terrible, do I need to get a DVD player

The first sentence says that you can%26#39;t record, the second says you can but at poor quality. Which is it. Are you trying to compare a digital signal to one converted to analog. Are you comparing a 1080p to a 420i. Find out exactly what you are, or are not doing and ask the question again. VCRs can not record in the same level of quality as an an HDTV can display so that is why it looks bad when replayed. A DVD Recorder would look better.
