Which is Better Dish Network Or Time Warner Cable??

Answer:

Hi,

I%26#39;d clearly vote for Dish cause:

- cheaper

- more channels and more variety

- awesome picture quality

You might check out http://www.dishnetworkbargains.net... - They currently run some promo with free Dish and DVR you might take advantage of. If you have any questions just call %26#39;em up, they are professional and helpful.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes

Mike Dish Network In my opinion Dish Network is better. Cable rates continue to raise! If you live in a area served by AT%26T you can get AT%26T-Dish Network(They Market The Service) along with Telephone, DSL, Long Distance and you can save a chunk of $$$$. You hear about Dish signal loss during heavy storms. Very Seldom have I experienced the loss of signal.

Which is better dishnetwork or direct tv?

Answer:

it depends on what kind of programing u like but as far as prices they r about the same Direct Tv I think each is better in some areas than others. My sister and her husband love direct tv (they live in Washington DC). However, my brother and his wife used to have dish network but decided to try direct tv and they hate it. They%26#39;ve had nothing but problems. Before it was installed, they had been told they would get HDTV and some other features, but when it was installed they didn%26#39;t get those features. They called and complained but the company wouldn%26#39;t honor what they were told. So now they are saying that the second their contract is up they are switching back to dish network. The only problem with that is the weather can mess up the dish (we live in Nevada) but I guess they don%26#39;t mind it.

Which is better for movies?? DVD R+ or DVD R- ?

Answer:

Depends on what type of DVD burner you have, and the type of Player you have, make sure that it says DVD+R/RW and/or DVD-R/RW. IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE IN QUALITY! THE BRAND THAT MAKES THE BEST QUALITY DVD+/-R/RWs IS Philips and Memorex. Available at Circuit City I found this really great file format called kvcd where u can burn everything 2 a cd. Download BitComet (just search for it in google) and then go to www.mininova.org and look for kvcd but make sure to get the DVDRip. I have all the new movies, even Spider-Man 3. To answer ur question DVD-R.

Which is better HD-DVD or BluRay Discs?

I%26#39;m looking to buy a new dvd player and am wondering which technonolgy is better.

Answer:

Right now the Blu-ray has pulled ahead of the HD-DVD...Click this link to see these two formats "duke it out": http://www.whydoesmyhometheatersuck.com/... The jury is still out on that one. HD-DVD costs about 500 bucks and Blu Ray costs about a grand. So you decide. Blu-Ray best buy has a display set up in their Magnolia stores...It is crazy..Ithought regular DVD was fine but the difference is undeniable. It is like VHS to DVD

Which is better HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?

Answer:

blu-ray

1. larger capacity

2. faster read speeds

3. way more major studio support (can%26#39;t get disney, fox, or sony movies on hd dvd!) Blu-Ray! hd-dvd Blu-Ray Rather than the meaningless "my games console format is better than yours" answers that you are going to get, you need some facts. Blu-ray discs have the potential to be better: larger capacity is one key advantage (some others were listed by another answerer.) However, that does not mean it will come out on top. The betamax/VHS case is evidence of this: the inferior VHS won eventually.

So I%26#39;d say, if you define "better" as "technical specifications which show a higher quality, amount of storage capacity, etc." then Blu-Ray is the format for you. If you define "better" as "the one with the most movies", you will just have to wait and see what the public go for and then ultimately what the movie people go for. Too much money has been invested by all parties for either to fail. It won%26#39;t be long before there%26#39;s a compatible player for both formats.

From when I went on a visit to Codemasters, they were all raving about Blu Ray because of it%26#39;s capacity, but that%26#39;s gaming.

It%26#39;s a case of sit back and wait to see who/what is going to happen and win through consumer demand because of the price at the moment. Remember when DVD came out? £400+ for a player.and now you can get a Tesco value player for 17 quid!! Whoever gets the price down first will win regardless of the quality. Beta was superior to VHS but look who won! As you can see from the answers every one has their own view point. If you are thinking of buying I would hold on a bit yet till one or the other becomes standard. The Blu Ray squad including Sony Disney and many others are changing the specification of Blu Ray and there is some discagreement on whetehr or not the PS3 will actually work with the new spec. That%26#39;s a blow if you just spent the best part of £500 onone. More info on this is in this weeks Micromart magazine.

Which is better, Sirius or XM? Which offers better news and talk? I am not interested in music.?

Answer:

XM really is starting to sux!

Ever sense the past few years they have been going down hill!!

Sirius is your best bet! It has a better selection of talk and sports channels! XM just has baseball! While Sirius has Football,Basketball, Nascar, College ball, and hockey!

http://www.radiosatellite.org/

They did a very good comparision on this site. 2008 they will be owned by 1 company so it dont matter XM is my best choice

Its service includes 73 different music channels, 39 news, sports, talk and entertainment channels, 21 regional traffic and weather channels and 23 play-by-play sports channels.

Which is better.. 10 inch sub or 12 inch.sub?

i want to purchase a sub.. but i want accuracry and muzic to sound as it is.. which size shoul i go for.. i can get two 10"..thats no prob..the thing is which sub sounds better..10" or 12".. in ne case..and muzic like rap ,pop and rock.if possible..give a detailed answer.thanx

Answer:

you really need to test them side-by-side. 12 it all depends on what you push it with and the enclosure you put them into

i`ve got a 6" in my truck and it`s great Might as well go with the 12" I have a 12" Sony and it has made a huge difference in music and goes great with my Bose Sound System. If you can I would try to test them out before buying one. I didn%26#39;t test mine out so I got a little nervise on how it would sound but it sounds good. I%26#39;m jamin to Van Halen right now and it sounds fantastic. Good Luck Well a 10 inch sub is more for a tighter sounding bass. Such as you would get with rock music. They dont go to as low of a frequency as a 12 inch sub. I really prefer the 10 inch in my car because of my musical preference and I like the tight punchy bass I get from it. Where as with a 12 you get a looser sound. Not necessarily sloppy but just looser. I like the 10%26#39;s personally. Either way you should line your trunk with either Dynamat or its equivelant. I%26#39;ve heard tar roofing paper works just as well but never tried it. It%26#39;s a way to go if you want to save some money.

Which Is Better?

My boyfriend and I just moved into an apartment and we were considering getting internet access I have a laptop so it would need to be wireless does anyone have any recommendations and which do you you consider to be better Broadband or DSL?

Answer:

Wireless has nothing with what you chose. You will need to get a wireless access-point/router regardless of the service.

IN DSL you are "guaranteed" certain uplink and downlink speeds.

You don%26#39;t need to have cable to get DSL.

Cable providers advertise higher bit rates, however those depend on how many other people use the same service in your neighborhood. If you plan to get cable, you may be able to get a very good deal in cable+broadband .

Check prices and get the lowest; however, after a year prices usually go up, so check those as well DSL

i%26#39;m familiar with the Garmin and it%26#39;s awesome. The thing is so accurate I can%26#39;t believe it. Which is gonna be better HD DVD or BlueRay Disc?

Answer:

It seems the GENERAL CONSENSUS is BlueRay, and I%26#39;ll support that as follows:

The following paragraphs are pasted from a web page, giving concise technological comparisons:

"Blu-ray Disc has a higher maximum capacity per layer than HD DVD (25 GB vs. 15 GB). Early (2006) Blu-ray video releases used primarily single-layer 25 GB discs, but an increasing number of current releases (2007) are using dual-layer 50 GB discs. HD DVD video releases have used 30 GB discs almost exclusively since its launch in 2006. However, disc capacity is just one of many technical factors that influence the final product%26#39;s audio/video presentation."

"There are also some differences in the audio compression standards (codec) that are employed on on the two formats. Most titles released on the Blu-ray format include Dolby Digital tracks for each language in the region, and many also include a Linear PCM track for the primary language."

There is MUCH MORE in this article you may wish to know. It is the first link below.

Also, perhaps you may be interested in the current competetive standings: "Of the high-definition discs bought by consumers in the first quarter, 70% were in the Blu-ray Disc format and 30% were HD DVD, according to sales figures provided by Home Media Magazine%26#39;s market research department.

Blu-ray took the lead in February, and its percentage of total sales accelerated to the point where it accounted for nearly three out of every four high-definition discs sold in March."

Pasted from a news article; the 2nd link below:

(BlueRay is more expensive, also)

Which is loud and have good quality sound in this two Alpine Or Pioneer speakers?

Answer:

Alpine speakers are of much better quality than Pioneer. I originally had Pioneer speakers in my car but I was not impressed so I switched to Alpine. I%26#39;ve had the Alpines in my car going on 3 years with no complaints. I have 2 Alpine Type R 6x9s in the back and a type R 12" DVC sub in the trunk. Its sounds damn good.Go with Alpine. You won%26#39;t be dissappointed. However, Pioneer does make better head units than Alpine. Alpine definitely, my car is full of alpine from head unit to the subs. my friend used to have pioneer and now he is changing to alpine cuz he heard my sound and it sounds better Pioneer vs alpine. they both have good quality. I would say that pioneer has a much more crisp and higher quality sound but pioneer is not a system in which u could crank and beat on. If u want a sound that you can toy with and crank and not worry about blowing ur speakers go with Alpine.

Which is more power consuming??

can anyone tell me what is more consuming?

a split type aircon with 1.5 hp on for 4-7 hours OR

a computer which is turned on for 10 hours with UPS 500 watts

can anyone explaine pleaseü thanks

Answer:

The computer consumes about 100 watts of power. For 10 hours, thats 1000 watt-hours or 1 kw hour. The rating on the UPS is what it will deliver, not what it uses. If the UPS is charged, it%26#39;s consuming very little power.

A 1.5 hp air conditioner consumes about 1119 watts per hour. (1 hp = 746 watts) Running for 4 hours is 4476 watt-hours or 4.476 kw hours. 7 hours would be 7833 watt-hours, or 7.833 kw-hours. Even for the shortest time, the A/C consumes 4 times as much power as the computer does over 10 hours.

There are other factors, such as the A/C may not be running constantly but cycling on and off as needed. You may have other equipment that you turn on with your computer such as printers, scanners, etc. But the A/C is still a much bigger demand than the computer. aircon without a doubt...

Which is more powerful, an amp or a volt? By how much?

I am thinking in aspect of vacuum cleaners.

Answer:

Amp is a unit of current. The rate of electrical flow.

Volt is a unit of potential difference or voltage. This is usually constant for all electrical appliances in a country.

In vaccum cleaners, the usual rating for how powerful the appliance is it POWER. The unit for this is Watts (W).

1800W is quite powerful. 1000W is quite weak.

If they only give Voltage (Volts) and current (Amps), simply multiply the two to get the power.

Power = Volts x Current. neither, they are two different measurements of power vote and amps are very differnent things, so you can%26#39;t compare them like this.

A simple way of discribing them is that Volts = "Pressure of the electricity" One amp is the amount of current produced by a force of one volt acting through the resistance of one ohm.

Ohm is the messure of resistance to electricity by an object. Sometimes a waterfall analogy is used: voltage is equivalent to how high the waterfall is, amperage to how much water is flowing. Power (watts) is volts x amps. (There is a technical point about phase, which we ignore.)

Since household voltage is 110 in the US, a typical 10 amp vacuum will provide 1100 watts. both or you can test it

Which one will win Blue-Ray or HD-DVD?

Keep in mind Disney is behind Blue and Wal-mart backed HD

Answer:

It could go either way, but my money is on HD-DVD.

The plus with the Blu-ray is it is on the PS3, which you would think would have a big effect on this format war. But, apparently the PS3 is selling nowhere near what it was expected to and most of those who have it do not even use it for the Blu-Ray. The average owner of a HD-DVD player owns about 9 HD-DVDS. While the average owner of the Blu-Ray player (PS3 included) owns less than a single Blu-Ray.

Also, the cheapest HD-DVD player goes for around $200 if you have a XBOX 360. Otherwise you can get it for less than $400 with 5 free HD-DVDs. Right now the cheapest Blu-Ray player is around $700.

There is also the huge factor that Walmart is rumored to be in talks to purchase 2 million HD-DVD players that they will sell for less than $300. If Walmart, the biggest chain in the world, sold those 2 million players the format war would be over in a flash.

Then there is also Sony%26#39;s track record with new media. While they make good electronics, most everything the make in terms of storage fails. Take the PSP and the UMD. The UMD was supposed to be the future of portable media but it is now a joke. Many people feel like the Blu-Ray will take the same road. Disney! HD-DVD

Which PLC is better generally speaking Siemens or Allen Bradley?

I tend to like Allen Bradley more, but Siemens is cheaper.

Answer:

i have worked with the above and it always (seems to me at least) depended on the application of the processes i needed to control. it does seem easier to train others with the AB, Pico isn%26#39;t so bad but can be limited to it%26#39;s programmablility. there was another one that i used, a product from Japan, but i cannot remember the brand, but it was very simple to program, dang, i wish i could remember, i could write the parameters on the laptop and then download them to the plc, all it took was basically for the operator to turn the machine on or off. to be honest with you i have never been exposed to Siemens plc product but am well aware of there quality from previous equipment. just an opinion, though limited.

Which radios would have the mose reliable, clearest and easy connection over 40 miles in an urban en

like would a 10 meter a 6 meter or a 2 meter be best in an area like the bay area so like San jose to San carlos or some thing like that.

thanks

Answer:

2M, thru a repeater, would be best.

You can get reliable 40 Mile, 2M simplex comms, base to base, with gain antennas, and perhaps base to mobile, with gain antennas. It will depend on terrain, and antenna heights.

This is to far for mobile to mobile, and way to far for HT.

10M is a noisey band, as is 6M. 40 Miles is possible on 6M. All of this is assuming FM. SSB provides better communications.

220 MHz is another band that would be possible, again depending on terrain. Don%26#39;t forget 70CM either. Our club 70CM repeater has excellent coverage over a 50 mile radius, and good communications up to 75 miles.

Which receiver can decrypt pay satellite channels for free?

I heard there are some receivers that dont have card slots yet they decrypt pay satellite channels.

Please help me with its brand and model number

Answer:

So you are looking for free cable or satellite Tv? There is one thing you need to understand first: there is nothing like a free Cable or Satellite. Of course there are free ways to obtain it, but they are illegal and you will be getting into BIG trouble using these services.

But there are other sites that offer free cable and satellite that are legal. You only have to pay a onetime membership fee. After that you may watch as many sports, shows and movies as you can handle for the rest of your life Membership to these donwload sites is low and varies. You will have to pay around $30 for unlimited access.

So once you paid your membership fee you have free TV for Life. A pretty good deal and honestly... don%26#39;t you think it is a good idea to stay legal?

They all rely on commodity sound chips, or custom chips. The chips have come from vendors like Aureal, Media Vision, ESS, Philips, Cirrus Logic and Creative Labs. A quick look at the new Microsoft VISTA compatibility guide shows an overwhelming support for Creative Labs products (i.e. Audigy or Soundblaster Live 24-bit), but a fairly huge LACK of support for MOST ALL other chipsets. Hence, your solution may be short lived unless you buy Creative Labs products.

If it were me, I would get a Creative Labs Audigy card, with or without breakout box. They can be found under $100 these days when on sale.

depends on the time frame. hddvd of course will have the market now, but in a few years blu-ray will dominate the market as companies find cheapers ways to produce them and the idea isn%26#39;t so new, hence the cheaper prices in the future. short term, hddvd. long term, blu-ray

Which TV Brand??

I am looking for a 42" Flat Screen And wanted to see what TV brand you like?

What TV brand do you like and why?

(Ex: Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, ETC...)

Answer:

Sony----because they always have an excellent rating. bettyk i have sony flat screen i like it Forget all those, go for Phillips, Sylvania or Toshiba. Sony, because they made the Playstation and have the S-wire h4%26gt;%26lt;0r5 I always pay the few extra bucks and get Sony. Sony has never let me down and has always proven reliable in the picture quality and longevity categories. Panasonic is really good, but the best is Pioneer plasma (or their ELITE brand). Go check them out at Best Buy and you%26#39;ll see what I mean. Colors are very rich, and detail is unmatched in my opinion. if your getting plasma pioneer is the by far the best, but you will notice this in price.

1. pioneer

2 samsung

3 panasonic

Sony doesn%26#39;t make a plasma only lcd so can%26#39;t rate them compared to everybody else.

You usually can find a samsung for a good price if you look around. Don%26#39;t buy cheaper brands for they break easier among other reasons. me like sony I purchased a 29" flat screen from Best Buy that was Insignia brand. Insignia is Best Buy%26#39;s private label brand, and because of that it was cheaper than the same TV of another company. I bought this TV a couple years ago, and it has been perfect the whole time, not a single problem.

Good luck!

Which type of cable do I use to connect my Korg keyboard to my studio monitors?

The keyboard audio out uses one left 1/4" phone jack and one right 1/4" phone jack.

The two monitors each have 3 possible inputs labeled: Balanced 1/4" phone jack, balanced XLR, and unbalanced RCA.

I want the highest audio quality. Should I get two balanced 1/4" to 1/4" cables (they look stereo) even though they will function each as mono?

Answer:

First, are the monitors powered (meaning do they have their own power supply)? This is easy to verify.. do they have an AC plug that goes into the wall? If not - answer is moot because you%26#39;re coming out of the keyboard at line level, not with a powered signal. For the sake of argument we%26#39;ll assume they are powered since you said they have a XLR jack.

XLR is the best of the 3 connections, but is used primarily with microphones. If you adapt from the XLR to 1/4" you%26#39;ll lose the benefits. If the output isn%26#39;t balanced, using balanced cables would be of no benefit.

Your 1/4" cables probably have one "ring" around them - meaning they are unbalanced. balanced 1/4" cables will have 2 rings around them... meaning your best connection will be to convert from unbalanced 1/4" to rca, and input them into the rca inputs on the speaker (unless your monitors will take an unbalanced 1/4" [also called tip-ring] in the balanced 1/4" jack [also called tip-ring-sleeve] - you%26#39;ll have to check your speaker%26#39;s manual for this.)

Hope this helps!

Which universal battery charger will charge my 3.7v li-ion camcorder battery that has a 850mAh capac

I have an i-sonic snapbox AV50 digital camcorder without a charger, I am unable to buy the manufacturers charger as they are in New York and noone sells them in the UK. I know nothing about battery chargers, there seems to be plenty of universal chargers on the market, will one of these suit my purpose? Does the battery have to be a certain size and shape? Or can anyone get hold of a i-sonic docking station? Thankyou.

Answer:

It%26#39;s probable that the battery is made by a well known manufacturer. Have a good look at it, even under the labels to see if you can find a make and model, then try http://www.mailorderbatteries.co.uk/page... for a charger. You can try the Uniross VC101719 for NiCD/NiMH/Li-ion which is rated at 850mA and has these control functions: Built-in overload and short-circuit protection, auto cut off. COmes with 5 adapter plates for different batteries. One might fit yours. Try www.batterymasters.co.uk.

Which uses more power or electricity?

Does being on your computer for lets say an hour use more power than watching big screen TV or using an electric stove for about the same time. Do you use more power when youare on the internet also? I want to watch the energy I use.

Answer:

The stove is definitely the biggest energy hog.

Computers and TV%26#39;s vary widely in power consumption.? A reasonably-sized LCD TV could easily be a lot less power-hungry than a gaming computer, but a laptop computer is going to whip most any TV (how long do you think the TV would run on batteries?).

If you really want to know, get yourself a Kill-a-Watt energy meter and measure the equipment you actually have. It all depends on the particular appliance, and how you use it. If it has an energy star rating, you can tell an approximate energy usage by the rating. Also, the bigger the toy, the more juce it uses (in most cases). If you have a small TV, it won%26#39;t use as much as a 52 inch big screen. When you are using your computer for serious gaming, it will be using more power, than if you were just checking your e-mail. If you can%26#39;t find the energy ratings of your appliances, you might be able to find them online by looking up the brand and model on the internet. Another big way to conserve energy is to turn the lights off when you are going to be watching TV or on the computer for a long time. Also, get energy saving lightbulbs. They may seem expensive, but they will pay for themselves in the first couple of months of use. Another energy saving tip is that many modern TV%26#39;s, DVD players, Sterios, etc . . . use electricity even when they are not on. To stop this, use a power strip with a breaker switch on it (which you should probably have to protect them against power surge anyway) when you are not using them, turn off the switch. On some electronics this will make you set the time every time you turn it back on, but most of them will have no problems with the power interruption. Also, when you are going to be away from home for a few days, unplug everything but the fridge. The savings on your bill will be worth resetting a few clocks.

Which will be the best ac(particular company) for my bedroom?

i want to buy an AC for my bedroom i have seen many ACs of differenet companies and I am confused my bedroom is 12X12 foot

Answer:

You%26#39;ll be surprised how most ACs look similiar when you look inside. I%26#39;d say the only factors you should look for would be:

1. After-sales service options

2. Features on remote and control panel, a timer, a auto-on-off scheduler etc would be an added advantage

3. Looks play a role, some ACs can be downright ugly.

4. Type of AC, split/window/etc. hitachi or O general BLue star is the best one.If u cannot spend much money go for LG vediocon ,we have it everywhere in our city! if you are prepared to shell out some extra money then carrier is possibly the best (in terms of performance and life),

though the cost is a deterrent Look at consumer report, make sure you have correct edition for your country.

Some info is on the Internet also, it is worth investigating. vediocon Before arriving at an answer for your question, itis necessary to know whether your bedroom is always sun facing or not, besides other factors such as rooms on top. Assuming that your bedroom is situated in the ground or in the middle floors of a building with not much sun light exposure, it is enough if you go for a one tonner AC. Otherwise you may require an AC with a 1.5 ton capacity. Now coming to the other question of brands, there are several well known ones in the market. In the high end brands, you may find OGeneral and Hitachi are quite good, although slightly expensive. They are generally silent in their operation and also long lasting. Please go through the specifications of the brands before buying the machine. Check for the EER(Energy Efficiency Ratio) of the products, as the higher EER is good for lower Electricity consumption. Check also for their BTU, as again the higher ratio is better for cooling efficiency. In the middle range you may find Samsung, Blue Star,LG, Videocon and Onida are there. But you may notice that proportionately the BTU and EER of these may be lower, although they also function reasonably well. Good Luck. if u r ready to spend between Rs.20,000-40,000,then panasonic e-ion ACs r the best.we have a 2.5 tonne split ac in our 18X20 foot hall room. it cost us Rs.30,000

Which winding on a three phase motor has the highest resistance??

Answer:

All the windings should have equal resistance. The direction of the motor is determined by the phase relationship. You can reverse it by simply trading any two wires. Three phase motors have high starting torque, smooth operation, and are smaller and less expensive to build compared to a single phase motor.

While using DVD Shrink, should I choose only 5.1 or 2-channel sound for watching the DVD on a 2 spea

I know this is probably a stupid question and obvious answer, but I don%26#39;t want to guess. I%26#39;m not that knowledgable on sound %26 electronics. When saving space for burning a dvd, I want to only choose 5.1 or 2-channel sound when ripping the dvd, not both. (my preference) The TV I%26#39;ll be playing the burned movie on, only has 2 speakers. So, I wondered if chosing only one or the other sound options, if it%26#39;ll affect the sound from the movie on my tv. Thanks for any input!

Answer:

go with the 2-channel, 5.1 audio is intended for t.v.%26#39;s that have speaker systems hooked up. i always go with 2-channel and it works just fine. Unless you have a 5.1 speaker surround sound system, using the 2 channel sound will give you more space for video and it will give you better vidoe quality if it doen%26#39;t have to shrink it as much because you used 5.1 I would guess that choosing the 5.1 track would still give you a stereo downmix when you watch and listen with a stereo TV, but I%26#39;ve never used the program.

Try one of each with rewritable DVDs and seeing if you can tell a difference.

Good luck.

Whill it hurt anything if i use a 6.5, 800ma dc jack in 7.5, 600ma dc jack?

basically my phone charger which is 6.5, 800ma works in this cd player i have which is calls for a 7.5, 600ma.

am i gonna start a fire, or

ruin my cd player, or

will anything bad happen by using the wrong voltage n stuff,

and what does the 7.5 and 600ma ,800ma mean

thanks for anybody%26#39;s help if they know whtat the hell i am talking about.

Answer:

On your phone charger the 6.5 is the voltage and the 800 ma is the current. Your cd player requires 7.5 volts at 600ma. Your charger puts out less voltage than the cd player requires. This may or may not put an extra strain on your phone charger. It probably won%26#39;t start a fire and won%26#39;t ruin your cd player however if the charger is straining because of the voltage requirements then you could burn out your phone charger. It would be much better if you got a 7.5 volt adapter with at least 600 ma output for your cd player.

There are AA, AAA, C and D, why not just A,B,C,D?

They originally were named A,B,C,D. The B battery was used in portable radios to power the tubes. That is now obsolete. As batteries were made smaller than the A battery they just added another A. Why are CDs round?

Answer:

Current CDs are round, but did you know the first removable storage disks were square? These were the "floppy disks" of the 80s and early 90s. But actually, only the exterior protective cover was square. The flexible plastic jacket was easier to manufacture by folding a plastic rectangle into two and punching a circle in the center and small access windows to access the inside.. Inside the black exterior was in fact a round piece of storage media that was spun around and read, with the same geometry as the CD or DVD.

Now of course, CDs are round so they are easily read as they spin around their central axis. Most people know that.

However, CDs and DVDs are not read by a laser... While an infrared laser diode does shine on the surface of the disk, the reflections from the disk are actually read by a photo-diode (a light detector), tuned to the same color as the laser. Newer DVDs will use a blue laser which will allow to store more data on a smaller area of the new "Blue-Rays" DVDs. ever try spinning a square? they have to spin. To ensure the symmetry of the reading device. so that they can spin without hitting the walls of a cd player/turntable plus the dial that reads the cd would not be able to make a square pattarn fast enough to read a cd yes of corse cd,s are round ask if m3 are niex time. Wheels spin better. Wheels are round. Besides its hard for a laster to read a very fine strip of information on a square CD although there are some CDs that are not round. So that the needle rotates spherically... because they need to spin and it%26#39;s the most efficient way to put information. think about it, rings upon rings of info compared to lines upon lines like a sheet of paper. the circle shape would be more compact. cuz they have to spin so you can hear the music there is a laser that reads the CD, it holds in a nearly steady position and reads "rings" around the cd. It judges what data is on the cd by notches in the cd. As the cd spins, the laser is basically reading a line of information, around the cd. Having a cd that isn%26#39;t round, would one:

Make it not smoothly spin in your cd drive

and two,

make information much less accurate and basically impossible to have readable information on. other than the need for a disc to spin, I think another reason is because a circle have more area to store data as compared to other shapes of the same perimeter. Also no offense to mellifluous...a CD player doesn;%26#39;t use needle. It uses a low intensity laser diode to read the tracks.

Why are HDTV (plasma and LCD) prices dropping so dramatically?

I remember maybe two years ago walking by the Plasma tvs and seeing out of this world prices, 5,000 and up. I went to circuit city today and I couldnt believe my eyes, WOW! 50 Inch Plasma tvs for 2,000! 42 inch Plasma tvs for 1299! What caused this dramatic price drop in two years? And is the quality improving or is it the same?

Answer:

Yes, many manufacturers cause competition, but it%26#39;s also a question of who%26#39;s competing over what.

There are more manuacturers of plasma and LCD screens, the ones who provide the visuals that the TV makers plug into the rest of the guts to make the total package. And the screenmakers are cranking out higher quality screens for less.

The big brands (Sony Sharp), left to their own devices, had planned to take advantage of the lowering cost of screens to make lots of money on margin. However, the upstart makes were buying the lower quality quantities and selling them at cut-rate prices. Now, maybe the quality of the unknown brands is uncertain, but it%26#39;s pretty well known that many of these products produce just as good a picture as the big brands.

The success of these unknown brands has forced the big brands to lower their prices. As long as the factories continue to lower the cost making those screens, and the upstarts are able to pass those savings on to the consumer, overall flatscreen TV prices will continue to slide. many companies = competition = low margins

Why are Japanese and Chinese so good in designing electronic gadgets?

i cant understand where do these guys get these brains. i mean i look under my cell cover or behind my computer on my calci or on my wrist watch in my PDA ,I POd it all says either made in China or Japan or Taiwan

My question is that what has governments in these countries done to achieve and create a benchmark in their countries achievements?

Answer:

The Japanese are characterized as perfectionists and not innovators. The Japanese have a 1,000 year history of copying and perfecting what they like, and they have always had an admiration for complicated miniturization. You will find that after WWII the Japanese went out and purchased quite a few patterns from all over the world and then marketed them brilliantly. The Japanese and the Chinese find or buy old inventions from Europe and the USA and then remake them better: they are killing us with quality. Example: a 1930 German sextant which went for about $1,500 is made better today by the Chinese and goes for $50.00! The Japanese in the 1950s %26 60s bought patterns from RCA or other American electronic firms and just improved the design and marketed them: the Japanese did not invent the television or DVD but they just made them better and cheaper.

The Japanese admiration for complication and miniturization, and also the Chinese, can be seen in Japanese Noh masks and in Chinese wooden puzzles. Japanese wooden Noh masks are beautiful creations that have many sophisticated working parts. Chinese puzzles are renown for their complication.

Why are regular markers bad for marking on cds?

Answer:

It%26#39;s not that they are bad for the CDs, it%26#39;s that the ink from regular alcohol-based markers doesn%26#39;t adhere to the plastic CD surface and wipes off too easily. Why are so many people still into analog watches?

Why are people still into it, since digital watches are easier to read and have features like timers, chronograph (with memory) and alarm(s).

Answer:

I would like to add one more reason.

It is far easier with an analog watch to see how much time is LEFT, or how much more time you have until your appointment.

Say it is 9:37 and your meeting is at 10:10 . A quick look at the analog watch and you know you have about 30 minutes.

With a digital watch, you need to do a more complicated subtraction. the reality is that analog watches are easier to read.

if it slight outside and your watch says 11pm you know its 11am because your brain figures that 11am is in the morning.

even a glance at an analog watch can give you an approximate time - digital requires that you focus and interpret the time as numbers I like them because they tend to look more feminine for women and in general they are classic. I also think it depends on what you are doing while wearing it. A quality analog watch is a valuable piece of jewelry.

A digital watch is a cheap toy made in Taiwan.

When there is a choice between utility and aesthetics, some will choose utility. Others won%26#39;t.

Another idea-it may be partly due to the same reason old people generally dislike and mistrust computers. yur a nerd right? lol omfg ROFLMSO Habits are hard to change, and most people don%26#39;t want to... I just feel there%26#39;s something elegant and classy about a nice analog watch. It takes a lot more craftsmanship to create an elegant timepiece than it does a digital watch. Besides, I like it when someone asks me the time and I respond with "half past, or a quarter past the hour" and the confused look I get from the asker. Besides, unless your into competition, who need as the extras anyway? analog watches give you a sense of the bigger picture. digitals give you that hour, that minute, that second..analogs allow you to see where 2:55 fits in with the rest of the day. Watch in Taiwan not cheap. Why china product so cheap? where you think everything in house made. france?

Different watch for different people. I like very much nixon watch digital and with hand. very nice. Because they are pretty, classy and just "nice".

I like them.

That%26#39;s reason enough for me. Besides being easier to read at a glance, analog watches help you see your deadlines creeping up on you. Some of the best analog watches are completely mechanical and split each second into many parts so you see fluid motion from the second hand. because some people like the old fashioned way

Why are there AAA and AA batteries, but not A batteries?

Answer:

The %26#39;A%26#39; size was the designation for an old, bulky battery that became unusable in newer, portable equipment.

They may still be out there, but so are dinosaur bones. There is an "A Battery"

They are typically used in Vacuum Tubes

To respond to Morey, yes there is a "B" Battery

Also used for Vacuum Tubes. Difference between A, B, and there is also a "C" Battery used for the Vacuum Tubes; is for the part of the tube that the battery is storing power for. For that matter- there is no B either, but there are C and D.

And- I even had an HP calculator that took N sized batteries.

Why are there bumps on a cd?

Answer:

Understanding the CD: Bumps

The elongated bumps that make up the track are each 0.5 microns wide, a minimum of 0.83 microns long and 125 nanometers high. (A nanometer is a billionth of a meter.) Looking through the polycarbonate layer at the bumps, they look something like this:

You will often read about "pits" on a CD instead of bumps. They appear as pits on the aluminum side, but on the side the laser reads from, they are bumps.

The incredibly small dimensions of the bumps make the spiral track on a CD extremely long. If you could lift the data track off a CD and stretch it out into a straight line, it would be 0.5 microns wide and almost 3.5 miles (5 km) long!

http://www.howstuffworks.com/cd3.htm... I didnt know there were any.

But if there is.. i assume its for the cd reader to pick up and read the information from the cd.

Why are there no AA Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Batteries?

All the best rechargeable AA and AAA size batteries use NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) chemistry, but lithium-ion batteries can store even more energy. There are lithium-ion batteries in other forms - such as RCR-123A. Why are there no AA or AAA lithium-ion batteries?

Answer:

dbliss,

Reason is chemistry. Typical Lithium cells work on the 3V range, defined by the chemical reactions inside. No 1.5V cell can be built.

Battery manufacturers will not produce 3V Lithium AA or AAA batteries to avoid users installing them in 1.5V sockets - so no device will burn and no legal claims will arise...

Why are those keychain remote devices called fobs?

Answer:

My husband says it comes from anything attached at the bottom of a chain. Pretty popular in grunge dress...

Here I found an official answer...click the link below.

" fob, or more commonly called a key fob, is a small security hardware device with built-in authentication used to control and secure access to network services and data. The key fob displays a randomly generated access code, which changes periodically, usually every 30 to 60 seconds. A user first authenticates themselves on the key fob with a personal identification number (PIN), followed by the current code displayed on the device.

Key fob is also a word used to describe a key chain and several other similar items and devices. The word fob is believed to have originated from watch fobs, which existed as early as 1888. The fob refers to an ornament attached to a pocket-watch chain. Key chains, car starters, garage door openers, and keyless entry devices on hotel room doors are also called fobs." From what I can see, the "fob" part is anything except a key that hangs off the original keychain ring. So a remote fob is a remote device that%26#39;s attached to the keychain ring. Popular are leather fobs which you can attach to your keychain.

Why are TVs getting bigger but the phones and computers getting smaller?

Just a curious thought about technology.

Answer:

Everyone wants to feel like they%26#39;re actually "there," when watching movies/TV and everyone hates to carry around big bulky things that take up space in your purse and/or produce an unwanted bulge in your pocket. tv%26#39;s are getting bigger so we can get the movie theater pix, and phones and computers are getting smaller so that we they are more portable Because they can. Because men don%26#39;t have great imaginations so they need enterainment to be as life sized as possible, but on the other hand they don%26#39;t want an annoying big phone in their pocket to annoy them when sitting down... and they don%26#39;t want a large computer screen on their laptop to get in their viewing way... Okay not really an answer, but a funny thought! :o)

good question There used to be B batteries, but they are no longer used. You can get them from specialty shops, but they are expensive. They were used to power things like old vacuum tube radios.

Why can I not move one of my Dish Boxes to another room?

Answer:

I don%26#39;t think there is any problem. You just need to get the cable from the dish to the second box run to the room you want it in. You can do this, or have somebody do it for you. I have a 2 receiver system, with the boxes in separate rooms. There was no problem.

Why can you switch positons of batteries in a remote control, and it will work again?

Answer:

Heinz M is right. The contacts can get an oxide coating over time and prevent current flow. This is a problem with small draw devices and remotes are generally very small draw. When you slide the batteries in and out you wipe off enough of the oxide to allow the current to flow again. You may have collected some oxidation on the contacts (bad contacts). Some remotes have an electrical loop that uses the same start and ending wire. As long as there are batteries in it, it will take their energy and order it into the loop as it pleases. Also, the battery + and - normally don%26#39;t matter for some products. The electricity can come out of either end. Here is a diagram of how this works. Hope this helps.

Why cant I get my microphone voice to be heard on the speakers while recording?

Here%26#39;s what I want. I want to speak into my microphone and have that sound come out of my speakers (nice loud surround sound) as I am speaking. I can%26#39;t get my PC to do that!!

I can record stuff using windows sound recorder software. As I am speaking, I can see it getting recorded but nothing comes out of the speakers. Later when I play it back, I can hear whatever got recorded. This sounds simple, but how in the world do I do it?

Answer:

You need another recording application. Generally, if you hook up your mic to the mic input socket on your PC, and talk, you should be able to hear yourself out of the speakers at that point(without even starting any recording application).

If you can, but when you run the application, the speakers are mute, then the recording application is muting the speakers to prevent feedback.

Feedback is a very real problem when recording from a mic, if the mic is anywhere in front of the speakers.

This is why at concerts, the mics are BEHIND the PA speakers that blow the ears off the audience!

You could download and play with Audacity - it%26#39;s free:

Why cant I hear my burned cd on a regular cd player?

It works on the computer when I put it in, but when I put it in a cd player, it says there%26#39;s only one track. And you can%26#39;t hear it. What%26#39;s wrong with it?

Answer:

You may have burned it as a data cd, rather than an audio cd, which would allow it to play on your computer, as it can read the data, but not in a regular cd player. Not all burned CD%26#39;s are interchangable with all cd players. Some cd players, especially GOOD ones, won%26#39;t recognize the lighter blanks.

Try a cheap cd player, or hooking up a boom box to your typical stereo. It%26#39;s possible that you burned the CD in MP3 format and unless you have a CD player that recognizes MP3%26#39;s it%26#39;s not going to work. You probably have it in MP3 format, which most old CD players can%26#39;t read. If you have a CD player in your car, it should work there. maybe your cd player doesn%26#39;t support MP3 format. You might have to have a certain format for the player. For example, some cd players will not play CD-RWs, so you might have to use another type like CD-R. It is not compatable. There are different ways to encode sound. See if your computer program can convert the files to MP3 or MP4, then encode them. Well every CD player reads codes and turns them into music that you hear. In the digital world that is 1%26#39;s and 0%26#39;s. If the cd that you stick in there does not have a readable code the cd player will not be able to read the cd. Therefore the music won%26#39;t play. It%26#39;s like if you try to read a chinese or italian book, whatever language you can%26#39;t read, you won%26#39;t be able to read it. Most car CD players are sophisticated and computer drives are universal. Thats how you get the difference. Same thing with DVD players, but with playing DVD%26#39;s the DVD%26#39;s are the ones with the blocked codes so you can%26#39;t view or burn them unless you have the right stuff if you know what I mean. I would tend to believe that you did not specify breaks when you set the tracks up.

Why cant i hear sound out of my speakers?

Answer:

What are you using them for? If they are for the computer, they need to be plugged into it, and the power cord needs to be plugged in, too. With everything on, you may need to go to computer control panel, select sound, and open it and see that mute is off, and volume is up.

If your speakers are on a stereo, then see if the correct speakers are selected for the hook up.

I will need more information to help further. maybe your speakers might be disconnetceted or check the volume control it might all be mute. that happens to me all the time.

Why cant I play my burned DVDs in a normal DVD player ?

I just came back from Bali and downloaded my DV cam tapes and edited, added music and narration to make a small movie of my holidays. I used Windows Movie Maker to do the above and then stored it in %26#39;My Video%26#39; folder. I then burned it using Sonic to a DVD-RW. Everything seemed to work perfectly so far ! I then put the burned DVD into my normal DVD player to view it on TV but, NOTHING ! I am guessing that I need some other software for the conversion. Can anyone help ??!

Thank you for whatever info that will help.

Why cant I record with a VCR from a HDTV, do I need a DVD?

I have a HDTV, if I record with a VCR %26 play back the quality is terrible, do I need to get a DVD player

Answer:

The first sentence says that you can%26#39;t record, the second says you can but at poor quality. Which is it. Are you trying to compare a digital signal to one converted to analog. Are you comparing a 1080p to a 420i. Find out exactly what you are, or are not doing and ask the question again. VCRs can not record in the same level of quality as an an HDTV can display so that is why it looks bad when replayed. A DVD Recorder would look better.

Why cant I use an U.S. made extension leads/surge protector on a step down 240V-120V converter?

I tried to plug the US surge protector extension lead in a step down converter %26 the surge protector got shorted straight away. Can someone please tell me why? Is it due to the restricted frequency (US @ 60Hz / UK @ 50Hz) or something else? Many thanks.

Answer:

Did you plug it into the 120V side or the 240V side? Have you used a meter to ensure that the 120 V side is actually 120V? It sounds like the surge protector saw too much voltage which is why it shorted out. I don%26#39;t believe the frequency had anything to do with it. The step down transformer will remove the earthing capabilities that you need for the surge protection circuitry.

This maybe the cause. I would say you are right about the frequency The US uses a 60 hz system Most other places in the world use 50 hz.

Why cant I use my record player?

This is probably a long shot, but I%26#39;m having trouble operating my record player. It%26#39;s brand new, so the fault lies with me, I%26#39;m sure. There are three switch settings, off, on, and auto. It also has a swing arm that sits above the needle arm or hovers over the label depending on where I put it.

One, what is the swing arm for? Sometimes the needle won%26#39;t move to the record and sometimes it does, depending on where I put the swing arm, but the swing arm never moves on its own.

Two, when I set the switch to auto, it doesn%26#39;t stay, and sometimes clicks back through on to off.

I basically can%26#39;t figure out what combination of positioning of the swing arm and switch the record player wants me to use. I and up trying different combination until it works, but there isn%26#39;t a pattern that I can see.

What does the darn thing want me to do?

Answer:

The swing arm is swung over the label and set down onto a record (or stack of records) which is propped up on the little latch near the top of the center post. When you press the selector briefly to "Auto" it initiates the automatic sequence to drop the bottom record onto the platter and then move the tone arm over to the beginning of the record groove.

At the end of the first record, the tone arm will then move out of the way and the next record will drop down on top of the first. The needle then moves back to play the second record.

This process should repeat itself until all the records have been played and then the player will shut itself off because the swing arm has now dropped downward as well, which is its cue that there are no more records to be played.

Pretty clever old mechanical technology, huh?

Why cant you have the microwave oven and a toaster on at the same time?

Answer:

Maybe if you have older electrical wiring you%26#39;d blow a fuse. Otherwise, I don%26#39;t know. I%26#39;ve never heard that at all. If that were true...half the breakfast serving restaurants would be ruined. It may be true if you plug both into the same outlet because you could overload the circuit, but I see no danger in operating both if they%26#39;re in two different outlets. says who? You can if your circuits will allow it. Both use a lot of current. They need to be on different "breakers" (fuses) so they will both work at the same time without flipping the breaker.

Start turning off brekers one by one and find out what outlets in your kitchen are on different breakers. I can. In your case, they probably both share a single circuit and the amount of current being pulled by the two devices is more than that circuit can handle. A microwave should really be on a dedicated circuit. My house wiring has a dedicated circuit for the microwave and two additional GFCI protected circuits for other appliances. That%26#39;s because typical microwave consumes about 1800 watts of power. At 120 volts, it is 15 amps. At the same time, a toster probably spends 1000 watts. That%26#39;s 7 amps.

If you connect them at the same time, they consume 22 amps.

Typical circuit breaker for home is rated either 15 amps or 20 amps. Either way, you exceed the allowed current, so the circuit breaker trips.

This is ONLY true if you connect them both to the outlets that leads to the SAME circuit breaker. BUT! Usually, all the sockets in the same room is connected to the same circuit breaker. That%26#39;s why. Because those two things draw more power than about anything in the home and half of the time they are plugged into the same outlet. This can cause a breaker to trip or in worse case , can cause a fire. Because nobody likes a ...Darn, I can%26#39;t think of a good joke.

Why cant you mix rechargeble batteries with alkaline? what could happen?

i want to mix rechargeable nimh batteries with some duracell alkaline batteries

Answer:

They are at different voltages, and current levels.

Rechargeables are 1.2V and alkalines are 1.5V. If they are put in parallel, the rechargeables will discharge into the alkalines.

Rechargeables have limited current, and are usually lower than alkalines. If you put them in series, the rechargeables will limit the amount of current in the circuit, eventually discharge, and then reverse voltage. Very simply, they SHOULDN%26#39;T be mixed, because they each have differing voltage and current ratings.

BUT, in a pinch to power up something, you CAN do it IF AND ONLY IF, the device using the cells has them connected in series, (as most devices do) and, you do not try to charge them in this configuration. (because alkalines are not rechargeable, and may EXPLODE in the worst case!) The downside is that the one or ones with the least ampere-hour rating will discharge first and it will be subjected to reverse current, which will damage it.

So as I said, In a pinch, OK, but just for temporary use as described above.

Why did mini discs fail to take off...was it the absurdly thin case that made writing a track list a

why, when you have to f.-k about fast forwarding and rewinding with tapes..didnt the near cd quality recording of the mini disc instantly take over.

Answer:

In my ill-infromed opinion it is all Sony%26#39;s fault. Unlike the CD format that that every manufacturer could use Sony kept a tight reign on Minidisc technology. The idea of the small Minisc when compared to a large CD for a portable music device should have been a winner, more so when you consider that many Minidisc players had the facility to directly record music from an audio source such as a home stereo without the need for a PC and at a time when recordable CD%26#39;s were relatively expensive.

Compared to the tape Walkmans the Minidisc was lightyears ahead and for a couple of years it looked like it would be a big hit, but then the price of personal CD players plumetted as obscure manufactures from the east started to make them by the millions. At this time everybody had bought thier music collection on CD and MP3 was a format known only to geeks.

Then, not so long ago, came the MP3 revolution. Everything you could ever want became available to download for a small fee (As honest citizens we would never pirate copyrighted materiel, would we? ;) ) Again the new generation of Minidisc players and drives allowed you to take advantage of this and create compilations on your PC. Again it should have been a winner. But again competiton came from the east in the form of cheaper solid state MP3 players. The death knell was sounding for Minidisc and the final attempt to turn it into a "status symbol" quality brand was killed without mercy by Apple%26#39;s Ipod. i had one it was good at the time ,but with cds u could make a mix cd in minutes for next to nothing...than mp3%26#39;s came a long..mini disc%26#39;s did not have a hope in hell I eventually bought a mini-disc player and the idea is great and definitely an advantage over tapes but it was a mission to put music onto it.

You had to install the software, convert music you wanted to put onto it and you could only play it on the player you had.

You still had to buy CD%26#39;s with the music and then rip it from there. Buying the original minidisc was expensive and then couldn%26#39;t be used in your car, PC, etc so who would want to buy that.

All in all, a good idea but MP3 players are essentially as portable and cheap but just far easier to load with music. my friend has one of those he likes it

Why did the VCD I burned didnt have any sound?

So I%26#39;ll give you guys the lowdown: I burned this particular VCD last night using Nero Express. The video quality was really good. The only problem I had was the fact that there were no sounds! The only sound I could hear were screeching sounds. I really don%26#39;t know what happened.

Answer:

Make sure that the file you burned has sound when you play the file on your PC. If this is a standard media file, such as an MPEG, AVI or QuickTime, the video and audio are merged into a single data stream and they are not saved separately. If the file plays on your PC with sound, then it MUST record with sound.

My guess is that the file you%26#39;re trying to burn doesn%26#39;t have sound. If it does have sound, then my next guess is that there is something wrong with the sound on your VCD playback.

Good luck!

Why do (most) CCTV images have that distinct blue-grey color tone?

Why can%26#39;t they be full color or simply black and white?

Answer:

You%26#39;re probably referring to indoor color cameras. If that is the case, the answer is simple. Cheap cameras. Better personal video camcorders have a circuit called auto white balance (AWB) which compensates for different lighting sources. Most indoor lights are flourescent (bluish) and most CCTV cameras don%26#39;t bother compensating for this. Take them outdoors into the sun, and they%26#39;re fine. You and I don%26#39;t notice this difference in color because of this miracle we call a brain that compensates for lots of things. The image on your retina being upside down, for one.

Why do alarm clocks snooze for 9 minutes ?

Answer:

Asda have sold me an alarm clock that snoozes for 2 MINUTES!! what is the point of that then?? hardly an extra %26#39;snooze%26#39; is it?? think yourself lucky cos you get 7 minutes more than me in bed every day :( Good frikken question.

I had a phone you could change it, but my new one is nine minutes. I dont get it?? you snooz for nine min. then you have one minute to wake up. A grand total of ten min. mine must be faulty it snoozes for only 5 minutes must go and get a new one It%26#39;s something like (If I remember correctly!) when mechanical alarms were fitted with the snooze feature the internal gears/workings set the alarm off again after 9 minutes as this was the only way it could be done, since then it has become a tradition sort of thing. There%26#39;s no reason why a digital alarm clock cannot be set to snooze for whatever time, it would only be a case of something simple like changing the value of a capacitor or resistor, so I guess the 9 minutes is a watchmakers thing. There are 12 numbers on the clock, if you take the hrs in a day (24) and them together = 36, divide that by the average number of feet on a bed (4) then you get your 9 minutes... pretty obvious I thought..!! Don%26#39;t know why as mine only snoozes for 8 mins and my cell phone for 15.
